Tony Penning is a superb training provider for Single Pitch Award (SPA) in the Wye Valley and surrounding areas.
Tony began instructing 15 years ago and holds the Mountain Instructor Award. He was part of the team that produced The Lower Wye Valley and Symonds Yat rock climbing guides. Tony is also a member of The Association of Mountaineering Instructors which is the representative body for professionally qualified Mountaineering Instructors in the UK.
Far Peak works closely with Tony on a regular basis, providing training courses and running trips to the Wye Valley and beyond with great success.

The Single Pitch Award (SPA) is ideal for anyone with personal climbing experience who has led at least 15 traditional climbs on leader placed protection at grade Severe level, who is involved with schools, outdoor centres, youth groups or acts as a leader for groups of novices.
The Single Pitch Award (SPA) will give you the skills you need to supervise groups of novice climbers in potentially hazardous environments and provides training and assessment on how to organise and supervise safe, effective and enjoyable sessions on single pitch crags both inside and outdoors.
Before attending a Single Pitch Award (SPA) Training course candidates must be at least 18 years old, have at least 12 months climbing experience and be a member of the British Mountaineering Council.

These sessions are designed for people who want to give climbing a try, and see what all the fuss is about. Even if you have only climbed the stairs, you will learn basic techniques to show you how fun and safe climbing can be.
The competent climbing course is for the complete novice, or those who have done a little climbing in the past, who want to learn the basics of safe belaying and climbing techniques.
If you are ready for the next level, these workshops will give you the confidence to step up and out as far as your ability will allow.
This workshop is aimed at those who have not climbed for a while and need to brush up on their skills before registering as competent users of the centre, focusing on safe and recognised belay techniques and rope work.
